Securatrak's South Australian BDM run's Great Wall Marathon
Recently our South Australian BDM – Michelle Simper competed in the Great Wall Marathon in Beijing. Michelle was able to raise over $2000 for Beyond Blue, and has shared her story with us.

Before arriving at the wall for the marathon, we were able to spend several days soaking in the beautiful sites of rural China on our journey to Huangyaguan.

On the day of the race I was out of bed at 2:30 am with my adrenaline pumping and a real focus on what was ahead for the day. Although it was dark and cold everybody on the bus was in a positive mood. There were people everywhere as we arrived at Ying yang square, Chinese brass bands playing and runners from over 66 countries ready to compete.

The first 5km was a run straight up hill until we reached the entrance of the wall where my planning and creativity really started to kick in. The next 4km was the hardest up and down climb I have ever done. This included a 700 metre ‘Goats Track’ that required you to hold on to the railing to even get down, I was forced to scale the 180 degree decent backwards. There rest of the marathon was like a trial run where I shifted into gear and got into a good pace.

The most amazing moment was around 17km when a few little Chinese girls stepped forward to hand me some yellow flowers.

Over the last few kilometres I had to use all my strength and knowledge to get me through. When I finally ran into Ying Yang square and through the finishing line, I was totally overwhelmed with relief, joy, pain, and thankfulness to be alive.

I was able to complete the race in 2 hour 39 minutes, finishing 74 out of 542 women and 2nd out of 29 for my age group.

Competing in this event was both stunning, overwhelming, a total privilege, and one of the scariest things I've ever done.

I wouldn’t have been able to complete this journey without support from Securatrak, Running Domain, Vital Physio, SARRC, Karmony, and Alicia Harvie Pilates.
